- To date, 959 unduplicated campers have enjoyed camp at no cost to their families.
- Over 20 schools and churches in the community have provided facilities for our programs.
- To date, over 580 individuals have volunteered their time serving the children in our care.
- Each year, children who have attended camp (in that same year) are eligible for our Christmas Angel Program which pairs children with community sponsors who purchase presents and clothes for the child’s Christmas. An average of 80 children are served each year in this program.
- At least once a quarter, our Seeds of Hope volunteers host free family focused events. All campers and their families are welcome and encouraged to participate in these programs that range from hands on food, crafts and a nature/farm animal experience event at Little Creek Farm, a yummy Breakfast with Santa, or a Valentine’s movie and dinner date night.
- Our mentor/mentee program is available upon request, pairing campers with a caring mentor to provide loving encouragement, guidance, and a commitment to be a consistent presence in their lives.
We are hoping to raise money and continue to make a difference in every child’s life that goes into the foster care system.
We expect the promotions of this event to reach over 100,000 people Age 20 to 65. We will be using multiple social media pages along with Full Page ads in two motorcycle magazines Full Throttle and Behind Bars. Background:
Heroes Helping Heroes (HHH) is a completely volunteer driven organization that serves children that are:
1) in the foster care system; 2) adopted; or 3) identified as “at-risk”. The Seeds of Hope summer camp program has been in operation since 2010. Programming expanded in 2012 to include yearlong development and mentoring opportunities. These programs are completely volunteer led and operate through the generosity of grant funding, corporate/business sponsorships, in- kind gifts, fundraisers, and private donations.
Mission Statement: To empower orphans, foster, adopted, and other vulnerable children by creating vital mentor relationships and providing meaningful life experiences and skills training that ultimately enhance their spiritual and emotional wellness and promote their joyful futures.
Goals:
- Reduce isolation, create supportive social networks
- Teach appropriate behaviors and stress responses
- Develop relationship and interpersonal skills
- Provide a platform of faith and inner peace
- Develop awareness of self and individual worth
- Promote health and wellness
- To recruit and nurture youth and adult leaders from multiple communities, capitalizing on a diverse pool of talents and experiences to enrich and strengthen our programming
- To create an environment in which youth leaders flourish
spiritually and emotionally - To foster a community of service minded leaders
HHH activities run throughout the year, are completely free of charge, and are 100% volunteer led. Our programming is intrinsically designed to promote health and wellness on a 3-prong level: mental, physical, and spiritual. To date, over 959 unduplicated at-risk, foster, and adopted children have attended Seeds of Hope programs. These programs are discussed in the following paragraphs.
During summer camp, children in K through sixth grade are allowed to select activity tracks tailored to provide entertainment, education, and skills training in art, sports, science, culinary arts, simple construction, spatial development, and fitness. Children in grades 1st – 6th also take a one-day field trip to a farm. For many, this experience is their first exposure to farming, animal care, nature hiking, or creek walking. While at the farm, every child is celebrated with a birthday party. The joy during these celebrations is overwhelmingly obvious, as some campers have never experienced a party held in their honor. Children in grades 7 and 8 are engaged in off campus activities with a focus on character development through service projects in and around our local community.
Family Focused Events: Corporate family inclusive events are held on a monthly to quarterly frequency with the intention of maintaining a sense of community amongst participants and staff, engaging parents and children in active play, social skill development, and relationship strengthening.
Mentor/Mentee Program: Caregivers have the option to request individual mentor pairings with their children as volunteers become available. Mentors, mentees, and parents meet to decide the frequency, duration, and location of visits as well as the nature of the mentor/mentee relationship. Contracts are signed by each party in the mentoring relationship defining the standards to be followed. The pairings are monitored to ensure the satisfaction of all parties.
To our knowledge, there are no other volunteer led organizations providing the same level of services free of charge to foster, adopted, and at-risk children in our area. SOH does collaborate with and receives referrals from a variety of partner agencies including DSS, the Guardian Ad Litem program, public and private school systems, mental health agencies, substance abuse recovery agencies, homeless shelters, food pantries, and domestic violence prevention programs. Resource agencies are encouraged to filter referrals to HHH throughout the year. HHH representatives also take an active role in community collaboratives who meet regularly to improve and optimize service delivery to vulnerable citizens.
HHH serves foster, adopted, and at-risk children. Core elements of Seeds of Hope programming have been developed to combat the perpetuation of the cycles of abuse, neglect, dependency, and poverty. Vulnerable and at-risk children often face complex issues which may consist of low family income, no employed parent/guardian in household, the absence of either/both parents from household, one or more foreign-born parent of recent immigration, may have at least one disability, retained in grade at least once, or they or their parents speak English less than “very well”. Mentoring programs are extremely rare to non-existent in the mostly rural communities we serve.
Common life cycles at-risk children often face include poor adult advocacy, lack of social support system, frequent transfers from school to school, unstable living conditions, inconsistent care, increased likelihood of learning disabilities, and inadequate life skill training. Generational patterns of of abuse, neglect, dependency often become generational and manifest in mental health issues, addictions/substance abuse, involvement with the criminal justice system, poor parenting skills/absentee parent, domestic violence, poverty, and lack of education.
We are helping to address these issues one child at a time.
